MONTREAL -- Montreal Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo will remain on the sidelines for the rest of the season, a decision that casts serious doubt on the prospect of the CFLs all-time passing leader taking the field again. Calvillo hasnt played since suffering a concussion in a game at Saskatchewan over two months ago. Alouettes general manager and head coach Jim Popp confirmed Friday that Calvillo will not play again this year. Popp said the decision was reached Friday morning after Calvillo recently had a setback. "He still can exercise, still train, but hes made a decision to shut it down this season," Popp said after practice. "Hes not going to return this year and hes going to concentrate on getting his health back where it needs to be." Calvillo was injured on Aug. 17 when his head struck the turf following a legal hit by Roughriders defensive end Ricky Foley. Calvillo suffered from headaches and had vision trouble in the days after the hit. The 41-year-old Los Angeles native later made appearances on the practice field and sat in on team meetings. There is concern that Calvillos 20-year career may be over though his plans beyond this season arent clear. He didnt speak with reporters Friday. Toronto Argonauts head coach Scott Milanovich, who was Montreals quarterbacks coach in 2007 and offensive co-ordinator and assistant head coach from 2008-11, was surprised to learn of Calvillos setback. "Thats disappointing for him," Milanovich said after arriving in Winnipeg for Saturdays game against the Blue Bombers. "It sounded like things were going well. Id hate to see him not get his opportunity to get back in there and if he chose to go out, go out on a more positive note." Calvillo broke Damon Allens league records for passing yards, completions and touchdown passes. His 79,816 passing yards are the most in pro football history, nearly 8,000 yards more than Brett Favre, the top passer in National Football League history. His 5,892 completions are second only to Favre in pro football history, and he ranks third in touchdown passes with 455, behind only Favre and Peyton Manning. The CFLs Most Outstanding Player Award recipient in 2003, 2008 and 2009, Calvillo has led the Alouettes to eight Grey Cup appearances. He has won titles in 2002 (when he was named the championship games MVP) and had back-to-back victories in 2009 and 2010. It was in the middle of celebrating his third Grey Cup win that Calvillo revealed that he had cancer. He had a complete thyroidectomy and recovered to continue his career uninterrupted the following season. Calvillos cancer scare came two years after his wife Alexia waged a successful battle against cancer. He seriously contemplated retirement following the 2011 season after suffering two head injuries. Josh Neiswander took over as the starting quarterback in Montreal this season after Calvillo was injured. Rookie Tanner Marsh held the job briefly before he tore a ligament in his right thumb a month ago. Josh Smith, who won the Heisman Trophy in 2006 with Ohio State, is expected to make his first CFL start Sunday when Montreal hosts Hamilton in a key East Division showdown. The 6-9 Alouettes are in third place in the division, four points behind the 8-7 Tiger-Cats. Also Friday, the Alouettes signed import cornerback Mitchell White and import running back Johnny White to their practice roster. Wood beat Cincinnati for the first time in his career, repeatedly pitching out of threats for seven innings, and Chicago stalled the Reds week-long surge with a 2-0 victory Monday night.ST. PAUL, Minn. - Marc-Andre Fleury was given a well-earned rest from the Pittsburgh net.Thomas Greiss didnt let him or the Penguins down.Greiss made 33 saves while extending Pittsburghs shutout streak to 205 minutes and 28 seconds, guiding the Penguins to a 4-1 victory Tuesday over Minnesota that handed the Wild their first defeat in six home games.I didnt feel too sharp, Greiss said. Bunch of rebounds I wasnt too happy with, bunch of small things, but its just nice to get the win.Nick Spaling, Brandon Sutter and Chris Kunitz scored for the Penguins, whose run of unanswered goals also ended at 18 when Nino Niederreiter got one on a breakaway for the Wild with 9:18 left. Rob Scuderi had two assists for the Penguins, who won their fifth straight game. Their margin of victory is a whopping 22-5.The Penguins have killed 30 straight penalties, four in this game. Their power play is ranked first in the league, too. Kunitzs tip-in off Evgeni Malkins feed gave them a 3-0 lead in the second period, just 11 seconds after Marco Scandella was sent to the box for the Wild for delay of game.Teams are intimidated to take penalties now, Penguins coach Mike Johnston said. As a result of teams trying to be careful taking penalties, you get a little bit more space. You get a little bit more opportunities to take pucks to the net.The Wild were the last team in the NHL to lose at home this season, outscoring their previous five opponents 21-6 at home. They nearly pulled within one with 3:05 remaining when Mikko Koivus rebound shot got past Greiss, but the goal was waved off. Because Mikael Granlund made incidental contact in the crease with Greiss before the puck cross the goal line, the NHL said, the call on the ice could not be reviewed or overturned. Its obviously very frustrating, definitely very big, because I thought it should have been a goal, Niederreiter said.Patric Hornqvist added an empty-netter to seal it for the Penguins, who were outshot 34-22. The Wild have outshot every opponent this season. All but one team theyve faced made the playoffs last season.I think we took for granted just being at home, Wild defenceman Ryan Sutter said.dddddddddddd. Weve had a lot of success here. We just came out flat, and we thought that we just had to show up to get the win.Star left wing Zach Parise suffered an upper-body injury and didnt play in the third period. Asked if its serious, coach Mike Yeo said, Sure hope not.Fleury posted shutouts in three of the last four games, but as the Penguins started a five-game road trip Johnston gave Greiss his second start of the season. He was in the net for Pittsburghs last loss, a 4-3 overtime decision at Detroit. Its tough to come in sometimes and play when you havent in a while, and he did a great job, Spaling said. There was times when momentum couldve changed pretty easily, and he did a good job of keeping us in there.Kunitz, Hornqvist, Malkin and Sidney Crosby have accounted for 60 per cent of Pittsburghs goals, so the third-line production from Spaling and Sutter was more evidence of this teams prowess.Defenceman Robert Bortuzzo made his season debut for the Penguins, recovered from a lower-body injury. He replaced Olli Maatta, who had surgery earlier in the day in Pittsburgh to remove a tumour from his thyroid gland.Pathology testing will be done to determine whether its malignant, but Penguins team physician Dr. Dharmesh Vyas said even if Maatta is found to have cancer hes not likely to need radiation or chemotherapy. Maatta, who made the team at age 19 last season and was second among defencemen with 29 points, is expected to be able to return to the lineup within a month.NOTES: Malkin has at least one point in all 11 games this season. ...
