Tempe, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Brett Hundley returned to the field on Thursday and showed why he was a preseason Heisman Trophy candidate, throwing four touchdown passes and running for another in No. 11 UCLAs 62-27 rout of 15th-ranked Arizona State. Hundley played with a heavily wrapped left arm after leaving last weeks win over Texas with an elbow injury. He played through the pain and delivered the best game of his collegiate career, completing 18-of-23 passes for 355 yards. He also gained 72 yards on eight carries. UCLA (4-0, 1-0 Pac-12) benefited from the big play, scoring four touchdowns of 80-plus yards. Ishmael Adams was responsible for two of those, returning an interception and kickoff for long scores. Jordan Payton made five catches for 151 yards and two touchdowns, and Eldridge Massingtons lone reception went 80 yards for a tally. Paul Perkins gained 137 yards on the ground, with 81 of those coming on a run late in the contest that included a highlight reel juke at the end of it. Mike Bervocivi made his first career start in place of the injured Taylor Kelly for the Sun Devils (3-1, 1-1) and threw early and often, completing 42- of-68 passes for 488 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. Jaelen Strong made a game-high 12 catches for 146 yards. Bervocivi threw for a pair of first downs on ASUs first drive but missed D.J. Foster on 3rd-and-8, leading to Zane Gonzalezs 49-yard field goal. Foster fumbled later in the quarter, and Kaimi Fairbairn tied the score with a 36-yard kick. The Sun Devils found the end zone late in the first quarter thanks in part to Strongs 25-yard completion. On 3rd-and-goal, Bervocivi rolled out to right then threw across his body to a wide open Kody Kohl right on the goal line. Busted coverage on the first play of the ensuing drive saw Thomas Duarte pick up 43 yards down the middle to the ASU 13. The offense stalled though, and Fairbairn kicked another short field goal. On the second play of the second quarter, Cameron Smith hauled in a 29-yard TD reception to give the Sun Devils a 17-6 lead. It was all downhill for ASU after that. Early in the next UCLA possession, Hundley dumped off a pass to Massington, who shook off multiple would-be tacklers before sprinting 80 yards to the end zone. Towards the end of the half, UCLA got a huge momentum boost with a pair of touchdowns to take a 27-17 lead into the break. The Bruins took their first lead of the game when Hundley capped a 90-yard drive with a short touchdown pass to Nate Iese. ASU then drove into the red zone, with Strong making three grabs for 39 yards on the series. With time running out, Bervocivi forced a throw that was picked off by Adams, who went untouched 95 yards to the house with two seconds showing on the clock. Another big play early in the second half left the Arizona State fans feeling stunned. On the second play from scrimmage, Hundley found a wide open Payton on the right sideline and blocking downfield set up his 80-yard touchdown. Arizona State finally ended a string of 28 points with a 24-yard Gonzalez field goal, but once again the Bruins were back in the drivers seat minutes later. Adams scored his second touchdown, taking the kickoff back 100 yards for a score and 41-20 UCLA advantage. Deon Hollins sacked Bervocivi and forced a fumble on the first play of the next touch, and two plays later, UCLA was back in the end zone. Hundley ran 22 to the 1 and Nate Starks punched it in from there. Bervocivis final touchdown pass -- a 5-yard TD to Ellis Jefferson -- came late in the third period. UCLA, which never took its foot off the gas until Hundley kneeled out the clock on the final possession of the game, added two more TDs in the fourth on Paytons short grab and a Hundley keeper. Mike Breys Irish picked up their 20th win of the season in impressive fashion, as they battled back from a double-digit deficit against fourth- ranked Duke on Wednesday to earn a 77-73 victory over the Blue Devils. The win was the fifth straight for the Irish and pushed the team to 20-2 on the season, with an 8-1 league ledger, good for second place behind No. 2 Virginia. Jamie Dixons Panthers are at the opposite end of the spectrum right now, trying to halt a three-game losing streak. Most recently, Pittsburgh fell in overtime at Virginia Tech on Tuesday, 70-67. With the loss, Pitt is now just 13-8 overall, with an ugly 3-5 record in the ACC thus far. This marks the 60th all-time meeting between these two programs. The Irish hold a 31-28 series advantage. However, the Panther earned an 85-81 overtime victory last year to bring an end to a five-game win streak for Notre Dame in the series. There arent many teams in the nation that could win a shootout with Duke, but Notre Dame proved to be one of them. Standout guard Jerian Grant played a huge role in the win with some timely shots down the stretch to propel the Irish to victory. Grant finished the game with a 23 points, 12 assists and six rebounds. Zach Auguste added 14 points to the cause, Pat Connaughton recorded a double-double of his own with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Demetrius Jackson contributed 10 points for Notre Dame, which shot a sterling .518 from the floor against the Blue Devils. TThere are very few teams more efficient than the Irish this season.dddddddddddd. Notre Dame is shooting .521 from the floor (second nationally), while averaging 81.6 ppg (ninth nationally). Scoring depth is apparent with four of the five starters averaging double figures. Grant is headed toward All-America honors and is a serious National Player of the Year candidate, averaging 17.4 ppg, while doling out 6.5 apg. Connaughton plays much bigger than he is (6-5), as he adds 13.8 ppg and 8.5 rpg. Auguste (13.7 ppg) and Jackson (13.3 ppg) provide even more offensive options. Mediocre numbers produce mediocre results and that is where Pittsburgh lives right now. The Panthers are in the bottom half of the league in terms of scoring at 67.3 ppg, while allowing 64.0 ppg. There arent any prolific scoring options on the roster, as Michael Young paces the team with 13.2 ppg, despite shooting over 50 percent from the field (.507). Young also tops the team in rebounding with just under eight caroms per contest (7.8). Jamel Artis (11.1 ppg, 5.3 rpg) has elevated his game and is second on the team in both scoring and rebounding. James Robinson (10.1 ppg) rounds out the teams top scorers. The Panthers allowed the Hokies to tie things up late and force overtime and then a Adam Smith 3-pointer with just three seconds left in the overtime session finally did in the visitors and kept Pittsburgh on a downward spiral. Artis had a strong outing in defeat, as he just missed a double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds. Cameron Wright and Robinson checked in with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Young struggled offensively, finishing with just six points, but he did grab a team-high 10 rebounds. ' ' '
